Legacy Planning
Wealth That Outlasts a Lifetime
Building wealth is one thing. Ensuring it endures – and means something – across generations is another conversation entirely. It’s among the most meaningful work we do.
Having grown up in a family of business owners, we understand that wealth isn’t just a financial concept. It’s tied to identity, sacrifice, and what you want the next generation to inherit – not only in assets, but in values and in opportunity.
A true legacy plan asks harder questions. Who do you want to benefit? How do you want your wealth to serve them? What structures will carry your intentions forward when you’re no longer here to express them yourself? We help you answer those questions – then build the architecture to honor them.
Estate Architecture
Trusts, Wills, and strategies designed to transfer wealth efficiently and intentionally – with tax exposure minimized at every stage.
Family Governance
Frameworks that align families around shared values – and give the next generation the context they need to steward what they inherit.
Philanthropic Strategy
Foundations, donor-advised funds, and giving strategies aligned with your values – and structured for meaningful tax efficiency.
Business Continuity Planning
Making sure your plan doesn’t depend on any single person to execute – so your intentions survive the unexpected and transfer to the appropriate people when it’s appropriate.
FAQs
Below are answers to some of the most common questions about this topic. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out for additional information or assistance.
How is Bespoke Legacy & Wealth Partners different from other financial advisors?
We start with a plan — not a portfolio. Before we discuss a single investment, we take the time to understand your life, your values and goals, and what’s most important to you now and for the future. Our focus is people in transition — business owners planning succession or an exit, families who have lost a loved one, and those approaching or recently retired. These moments are too consequential for a generalist. We’ve spent more than three decades working exclusively in these situations, and we collaborate closely with your advisors, including attorneys and CPAs, so nothing falls through the cracks — and you can move forward with clarity and confidence.
Who do you typically work with?
Our clients are people who have worked hard, built something meaningful, and now find themselves at a crossroads — transitioning out of a business they’ve spent a lifetime building, navigating the loss of a loved one, or stepping into a retirement that finally arrived. They come to us not just for financial guidance, but for a trusted partner who understands that these decisions are as personal as they are financial. What they have in common isn’t a balance sheet. It’s the recognition that this moment is too important to figure out alone.
How do I know if I'm ready to work with a financial advisor?
If you’re asking the question, you probably are. Most people don’t wait until everything is perfectly organized before they see a doctor — the same logic applies here. You don’t need to have all the answers, or even all the questions, before reaching out. What matters is that something has changed — a business milestone, a retirement on the horizon, a loss, or simply the feeling that your financial life deserves more attention than it’s been getting. That’s enough to start. Our first conversation costs you nothing but an hour of your time — and it begins with us listening, not presenting.
What is it like to work together?
It begins with an unhurried conversation — about your life, your goals, and what’s keeping you up at night. No forms, no presentations, no agenda other than truly understanding your situation. From there, we build a plan that’s completely bespoke — designed around your values, your priorities, and the future and legacy you want to create. We coordinate every dimension of your financial life, and we work closely with your other advisors to make sure everything fits together seamlessly. But working together isn’t a one-time event. We stay engaged as your life evolves — because a great plan isn’t static, and neither are you. What our clients tell us they appreciate most isn’t just the expertise. It’s knowing that someone who genuinely understands their situation is in their corner.
I'm a business owner thinking about transferring or selling — where do I even start?
With a conversation — and earlier than you might think.
The biggest mistake business owners make is waiting too long to plan. Most transitions benefit from a minimum of three to five years of preparation — not just to get your finances in order, but to do the work that can meaningfully enhance the value of your business before a sale or transfer. That kind of positioning takes time.
Before the numbers, there are questions worth sitting with. What do you want your life to look like after the transition? What does financial independence mean for you and your family? And what do you want the business to become after you’re gone?
Once we understand those answers, we build the financial architecture around them — tax strategy, exploring value enhancing and exit options, estate planning, and the personal financial plan for the life that comes next.
We hold the Certified Business Exit Consultant® designation specifically because this work is too important for a generalist. If you’re beginning to think about a transition — even if it feels far away — the best time to start is now.
I’ve lost a loved one and just received an inheritance – what is my next step?
First, give yourself permission to grieve. The financial decisions can wait a little longer than you think — and making major moves while you’re in the immediate fog of loss is rarely the right approach.
When you’re ready, the most important first step is simply getting organized. Understanding what you’ve inherited — accounts, real estate, insurance policies, business interests — and what decisions need to be made, and by when. Some things are time-sensitive. Many aren’t.
We’ve created a Survivor Checklist to help you navigate the immediate steps without feeling overwhelmed. And what we provide beyond that isn’t just financial guidance — it’s a steady, patient presence that helps you understand your full picture without pressure or urgency, and a clear plan for moving forward that honors both your needs and the wishes of the person you lost.
If you’re not sure where to start, start here. We’ll help you figure out the rest.
What's the difference between estate planning and legacy planning?
Estate planning is the legal and financial structure — the wills, trusts, beneficiary designations, and tax strategies that determine what happens to your assets during your lifetime and when you’re gone. It’s essential, and it’s something we coordinate carefully for every client.
Legacy planning goes deeper. It asks not just where your assets go, but what you want them to mean. What values do you want to pass forward? Are your heirs prepared to steward what they’ll inherit? What impact do you want to have on the people and causes that matter most to you?
Both matter. And when they work together, the result is something far more rewarding and powerful than either one alone. Think of it this way — estate planning tells your money where to go. Legacy planning gives it a reason to get there.
What should I bring to our first conversation?
Nothing formal. No tax returns, no account statements, no neatly organized folders. That’s not what the first conversation is about.
What we’d ask you to bring is an open mind and a willingness to talk honestly about your life — where you are, what’s working, what isn’t, and what you want the future to look like. The numbers matter, but they come later. First we want to understand the person behind them.
If anything, the most useful thing you can do beforehand is spend some time with our Defining Your Wealth Workbook. It’s designed to help you get in touch with what money truly means to you — and clients tell us it’s one of the most clarifying things they’ve done before a first meeting. But even that isn’t required. You can simply show up as you are, and we’ll take it from there.
Do you manage investments?
Yes – but investment management is one part of a much larger picture, not the starting point. Before we discuss how to build your portfolio, we want to understand your complete financial situation, your goals, your timeline, and what you’re ultimately planning for. Too often people come to a financial advisor and walk away with a portfolio but not a plan. We do it the other way around. The investment strategy we recommend is always in service of the larger plan — designed to support the life and legacy you’re building, not drive it
How are you compensated?
We are a fee-based practice — financial planning and asset management are provided for a fee, and in some cases, such as insurance, we may receive a portion of the premium. We believe you should always know exactly how your advisor is compensated, and we’re happy to discuss this openly at the outset of every relationship.
What we can tell you is that our recommendations are always driven by what’s right for you — not by what generates the highest compensation. Transparency is fundamental to the way we work, and if you ever have questions about how we’re compensated, just ask.
Thoughtful Planning. Enduring Legacy.
